Tibet Activists Protest During Trump–Xi Washington Summit
Pro-Tibet activists demonstrated near the U.S. Capitol as President Donald Trump hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington. Protesters demanded religious and political freedoms, access for independent journalists and transparency over August’s deadly Nepal–Tibet border floods. Uyghur, Hong Kong, Taiwanese and democracy groups also joined demonstrations across the capital.

The demonstrations brought Tibet’s human-rights conditions and strict media restrictions into focus during high-level U.S.–China talks otherwise dominated by trade, artificial intelligence and geopolitical competition.
Tibetan advocacy groups will press Washington to raise human rights, religious freedom, political prisoners and unrestricted access to Tibet in future talks with Beijing. China has not indicated that foreign journalists will receive wider access.
