Ganesh Mahotsav at SVCC Bangkok: “Vakratunda – The Wisdom Within” Kathak Recital on 18 September

Bangkok’s Indian cultural calendar marks Ganesh Mahotsav with an evening of classical dance. “Ganesh Mahotsav – Vakratunda (वक्रतुंड): The Wisdom Within” will be held at the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC) on Friday, 18 September 2026. The programme is a Kathak recital devoted to Lord Ganesha, revered as the remover of obstacles and the lord of wisdom and new beginnings. The evening features Mr. Ravi Yadav, a Doordarshan-graded Kathak artist from India, performing with Ms. Ingkarat Sivamatheewit, Kathak teacher at SVCC. Their joint performance brings together an Indian exponent of the form and a Thai teacher of it, which reflects the growing cultural exchange between India and Thailand. The title Vakratunda, meaning “the one with the curved trunk,” is one of Lord Ganesha’s best-known names. It comes from the widely recited invocation Vakratunda Mahakaya. Kathak is North India’s classical storytelling dance, known for intricate footwork, spins and expressive abhinaya. It is well suited to portraying the stories and symbolism of Ganesha. The recital falls during the 10-day Ganeshotsav, which began with Ganesh Chaturthi on 14 September.
