Air force chief: poor visibility caused chopper crash
(BangkokPost.com) - The Commander of the Royal Thai Air Force, ACM Chalit Phukpasuk, said the cause of the crash of a military helicopter in the mountainous area of Betong district,Yala province on Wednesday was reportedly due to poor visibility together with the helicopter's old engine. A colonel and nine other airmen were killed in the accident.
ACM Chalit said the UH-1 Huey Helicopter was given by the United States in 1969 and it had been operating for about 39 years. However, he said the Thai air force is performing helicopter maintenance on a continual basis. According to the air force chief, the budget for purchasing new military helicopters is not yet adequate, thus prompting the 10 officers to use the old model. ACM Chalit said the air force is preparing to buy new choppers to increase its competency. By Rajesh Kumar, Section News Posted on Thu Aug 07, 2008 at 08:09:48 AM EST
