`DEMOCRACY` ALLIANCE PLANS TUESDAY RALLIES AGAINST GOVERNMENT
The People`s Alliance for Democracy (PAD), dedicated to removing policies and personalities in government who have been associated with or having on behalf of the ousted government of Thaksin Shinawatra, will hold a major demonstration at several places here next Tuesday, said a PAD core leader Saturday.
It is optimistic that there would be a change in the present coalition government of Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej. Maj-Gen. Chamlong Srimuang urged the 'democracy activist' coalition PAD, which has been demonstrating in the capital since May 25, to converge at the group's semi-permanent venue at the Makkawan Bridge near the United Nations Asian and Pacific regional headquarters, the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) early Tuesday. Without disclosing the destinations of Tuesday's marches, Gen. Chamlong said Thailand will continue to suffer if the present government is allowed to administer the country because it plans to spend a large amount of money on a number of projects. He reasserted that the Tuesday demonstrations would be peaceful and that the PAD's goal is that the government should resign.
The PAD will assess the situation again after Tuesday's march and it will continue demonstrating if the government continues to cling to power, Gen. Chamlong said. Next Monday, the PAD will march to a Bangkok school targeted for demolishment to offer morale to students as the government clears the schoolgrounds and adjacent properties to make way for construction of a new parliament building for Bt30 billion.
