BMTA puts fare hikes on hold

The state-run Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) yesterday backed down from its decision and agreed to put its fare hikes on hold, said Deputy Transport Minister Songsak Thongsri.

Mr Songsak announced the good news after talks with Deputy Prime Minister Sahas Bunditkul and relevant agencies.

''The public is already suffering from the rising cost of living. The fare hike would be another big blow. So this is how the BMTA can help,'' he said.

However, privately-owned buses will press ahead by charging an extra 1.50 baht on non-airconditioned buses and one baht more for rides on minibuses and airconditioned buses, starting today.

Transport Co managing director Wuthichart Kalayanamitr said the state-run company would go ahead by charging three satang more per km for rides on its inter-provincial buses from today.

Mr Songsak said the BMTA has decided to freeze the ticket prices for now as it is urgently procuring NGV-powered buses, which would come into service in about six months.

The fare for the BMTA's non-aircon buses will remain at seven baht and eight baht, depending on the colour of the bus. The minimum charge on its aircon buses would be 11 baht.

For privately-run buses' new rates today, ordinary buses will charge nine or 10 baht, depending on the colour of the bus, and aircon buses will charge from 14 to 26 baht.

The new fares will remain in place until at least tomorrow when the Central Administrative Court will decide whether a consumer group's petition against the increases should be accepted for consideration.
