King's 80th Birthday Celebration is the best moment: poll

 The Celebrations on the Auspicious Occasion of His Majesty the King's 80th Birthday on December 5 was the best moment for Bangkokians in 2007, according to a Bangkok University poll.

A recent opinion poll on "Best and Worst of 2007 in Bangkokian's View" conducted by the Research Institute of Bangkok University showed that for 46 per cent of respondents the best moment of 2007 were the Celebrations on the Auspicious Occasion of His Majesty the King's 80th Birthday on December 5.

The poll was conducted December 21-26 among 1,198 Bangkok residents.

Slightly over 40 per cent said that the discharge of His Majesty the King from Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital on November 7 was their happiest moment, while only 6.7 per cent said the general election on December 23, the first after the coup, was their top choice.

Meanwhile, 33 per cent said the violence in the three southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat was the saddest situation in the country, while 18.1 per cent said the news on the sickness condition of  Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, eldest sister of the king.

One in seven -- 14.2 per cent -- said the most depressing concern was the ongoing political conflict, 11.2 per cent identified the One-2-Go aircrash at Phuket International Airport and 3 per cent said the death of Big, a member of the musical trio D2B, was the worst moment.

As for the most admired figure, 18.5 per cent named Prime Minister Gen. Surayud Chulanont, 9 per cent said ex-prime Thaksin Shinawatra, 8.7 identified teachers and officials working in the southern border provinces, while 8.6 per cent said Deputy Prime Minister and former chairman of Council for National Security (CNS) Gen. Sonthi Boonyaratkalin.

When asked who conducted the most upsetting behaviour, one in three -- 35.3 per cent -- named ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, while two groups of complainants  each registeristing 15.3 per cent of the total identified People Power Party leader Samak Sundaravej, 6.2 per cent said Gen. Surayud.

Military staff working in the three southernmost provinces were named the most admirable organisation with 8.2 per cent while the most disturbing organisation was Gen. Surayud's government. (TNA)-E003
