Update: Thai police to consult FBI on film festival scandal
(BangkokPost.com) - Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont will hold talks with National Police Chief Seripisuth Temiyavej on the bribery scandal surrounding former governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Juthamas Siriwan on Thursday afternoon.
They are hoping to ask for cooperation from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to provide Thai police with more information on the case after Los Angeles police arrested Gerald Green, 75, and his wife, Patricia, 52, for violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. They were accused of paying bribes of up $1.7 million (currently 52 million baht) to a Thai government official to obtain lucrative contracts to run the Bangkok International Film Festival and other deals. Gen Surayud will press ahead with the investigation and vowed to bring to justice any Thai government official found to have been involved in the scandal.
Meanwhile, Ms Jutamas, who was preparing to contest in the Dec 23 election as a party-list MP for Puea Pandin party before the scandal erupted, has now tendered her resignation from the party. She insisted her decision was voluntary and that she wanted to avoid implicating Puea Pandin party with the scandal. The ex-TAT governor also denied any involvement in the graft case and threatened to sue the US authorities. http://www.bangkokpost.com/breaking_news/breakingnews.php?id=124575
