The Ministry of Tourism and Sports recently announced a half-American-half Japanese as the only Thai national formula one racer. But the sportsman isn't so sure the official endorsement can help him fulfill his dream.

He debuted in motorsport after winning the 2004 Formula BMW Scholarship with Minardi Team Asia. In 2005, he joined Meritus racing team and became the winner at the Formula 1 support race at the Bahrain Grand Prix. In the same year, he earned second place at the Formula BMW Malaysia event.

Chawakij's status as a Thai national formula one racer was recently endorsed by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

Chawakij or Bobby participated in all the racing events on his father's expenses to the tune of as much as 6 million baht per year.

His current plan is to form a Thai national team to participate in the A1 Grand Prix, the most prestigious motorsport event, equivalent to the Football World Cup.
Chawakij

There are 22 participating countries. But it's a pity there is not any team from Thailand although Thailand's motor racing sport has a much longer history than China, Japan and Malaysia.

Chawakij hopes to lead a Thai national team in the A1 Grand Prix within two years. But he admitted his dream was very difficult to fulfill, because it required an enormous budget, as much as 130 million Baht, for establishing and managing a racing team. He is looking for sponsorship from Thai companies.

He said it would be strange if a Thai racing team was sponsored by foreign companies. In fact, I would like to make a national pride for all Thai people.
