Politicians are trying to come up with attractive campaigns and catch phrases
Polling season officially kicked off on Wednesday with the registration of party candidates under the proportional representation system with the Election Commission and the drawing of candidacy numbers.
But voters' mood generally remained sombre, with many saying they were fed up with Thai politics and were not keen to catch up with the latest political developments. A handful even said that they want to ignore the polls altogether because they do not believe the elections will bring any dramatic changes to the country. But like it or not, you'll have to live with old politician wine in new bottles, their sweet election promises, and mudslinging among rival parties for another six weeks. So instead of turning your back on the election campaigns, let's keep a close watch on the situation and enjoy this latest chapter of the Thai political drama together. Looking at them carefully, you'll also find a funny side to it, as politicians are trying to come up with attractive campaigns and catch phrases to make themselves and their parties recognisable.
We've already seen some of it during Wednesday's candidacy registration when each party came along with eye-catching parades, pretty girls and gadgets. Party leaders also took turns making light-hearted comments after party numbers were drawn. "We will save a lot of money on the production of billboards because this is the same number we got in the previous election," Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said after his party drew number four. "Number nine is an auspicious number. This will bring good luck to our party. No matter how many seats we win in this election, I will remain as solid as a rock. Even if dogs pee on it or passers-by stamp on it, this great rock will remain a great rock," said Pracharaj party leader Sanoh Thienthong. Observing outspoken politicians attacking their opponents, critics and the media is also as entertaining as when you watch a soap opera. However you choose to look at the Dec 23 election, make sure to keep the movements of vote seekers under the microscope as ignorance is the biggest foe to the development of democracy. At least it's good to see all the parties competing under the same rules, although the rules may not be perfect.
