Thai EC threatens to dissolve parties seeking help from former ruling party executives
Thailand's Election Commission (EC) chief has threatened to dissolve any party accepting help from the 111 former Thai Rak Thai Party executives who had been banned from seeking political posts for five years, for their election campaigns.
Apichart Sukhagganond said his agency will not review its resolution last Friday which prohibits any of the 111 ex-TRT executives from making public speeches or other political activity in support of any candidate running for parliamentary seats in the upcoming Dec. 23 election, according to Thai News Agency.
Otherwise, he warned, the party or parties to which the candidates belong may be dissolved by law. By Rajesh Kumar, Section Elections 2007 Posted on Tue Nov 20, 2007 at 06:37:33 AM EST
The commission chief said the EC's resolution by no means violated the human rights or freedom of expression of any politicians as charged by former deputy prime minister Chaturon Chaisaeng.
Chaturon, one of the banned 111 TRT executives and formerly the acting leader of the TRT, planned to speak publicly at Bangkok's Chatuchak Park Friday in defiance of the EC's prohibition. Apichart said those ex-TRT executives are free to make statements in public places as long as they are not considered as a verbal support for any particular party or candidate contesting the nationwide election. Chaturon's planned Friday speech would certainly be taped for monitoring by the polling agency, Apichart said. Earlier on Tuesday, the Prime Minister's Office Minister Thirapat Serirangsan also warned the TRT party executives against consequences if they defied the EC's resolution by continuing to be involved in campaign activities. Many of the banned executives now served as advisers for the People Power Party (PPP), which is seen as the new banner for the TRT and its founder, the deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Two other former TRT executives, Surakiart Sathirathai and Suranand Vejjajiva, who earlier served the Puea Pandin (For the Motherland) Party as advisers resigned from the positions late Monday to comply with the EC's rules. Advisers of the Chart Thai (Thai Nation) Party, Paveena Hongsakul and Sonthaya Khunplome, who are among the 111 TRT executives, also quit their new parties Monday. http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2007-11/20/content_7116709.htm
