Anti-power plant protesters dispersed

Thousands of demonstrators who gathered at the Ministry of Energy to protest the planned construction of power plants, dispersed on Tuesday evening.

The protesters vowed to continue the rally and bring the case to the Administrative Court. A large number of protesters from Prachuap Khiri Khan, Rayong, Chonburi, Ratchaburi and Chachoengsao provinces, opposing the planned construction of power plants, congregated outside the Natural Resource and Environment Ministry before moving to the Energy ministry.

Leaders of the groups claimed the Environmental Impact Assessment studies or EIA of the power plant construction projects were not based on the actual situation. The polluted water and air from power plants later negatively impacted the local environment and affected the health of villagers.

The demonstrators lashed out at the office of natural resources and environmental policy and planning which had approved the project assessments. The protesters submitted a letter to the office demanding all projects be suspended.

Meanwhile, the director of the Energy Policy and Planning Office said the Energy Ministry sent letters to the governors of three provinces to confirm whether or not most local residents opposed the Independent Power Producer project. After receiving a response from the governors, the EIA of each project will be reconsidered. (TNA)-E004
