Two Thai Teachers Sentenced For Sexually Abusing Students
Bangkok, Thailand (AHN) - Two primary school teachers were imprisoned 50 years each by a Bangkok criminal court Tuesday for molesting five students between the ages of six to eight.
The court found 59 year old Lorn Sorakanit and Pimol Chumsri, 49, guilty of sexually abusing, molesting and illegally detaining four girls and one boy between June and August 2006. Although both teachers denied the charges, they were found guilty on grounds that the children were too young to be making up stories to incriminate them. According to Agence France-Presse, in its ruling, the court accused the teachers of taking it in turns to rape the girls and forcing their classmates to watch.
A child protection group, Paveena Hongsakul, helped parents of the children file charges against the teachers last August. The teachers, teaching at a public school on the outskirts of Bankok, said they would appeal. Following a string of recent pedophile arrests, Thailand has become a focus of international concern over child sex abuse.
