Flooding in South, fire alert in capital
Residents in areas of Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat and nearby provinces were yesterday warned of possible floods and landslides as a result of heavy downpours, while residents of Bangkok were warned of fires because of dry and windy conditions.
Mineral Resources Department director-general Apichai Chawacharoenphan said yesterday that forest runoff and associated landslides were likely in the southern areas over the next day or two, in particular Phato and Lang Suan districts in Chumphon; Vibhavadi, Khiri Rat Nikhom, Ban Ta Khun and Phanom districts in Surat Thani and Lan Saka, Ron Phibun and Thung Song districts in Nakhon Si Thammarat. There has been more than 100 millimetres of rain in the past few days, bringing flooding to many areas. Motorists have been warned to watch for mud and rock slides. Meanwhile, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's disaster prevention and mitigation deputy director Thanik Yuthasunthorn warned that dry and windy weather could result in fire in crowded communities. There have already been several. All city residents have been asked to take care while cooking or burning rubbish. Electrical appliances and wiring should be checked for safety, he said.
