THAI hints at hiking fares in 2008

(BangkokPost.com) - Thai Airways International (THAI) may soon succumb to the effects of global oil prices by announcing a fare hike.

The national air carrier has hinted that it could soon increase fuel surcharges by 3-4 percent starting January 2008.

According to Pandit Chanapai, who recently assumed the post of executive vice-president in charge of commercial affairs, the price hike will only affect long haul flights.

"Domestic flights will remain unchanged for the time being to encourage people to travel within Thailand," he said.

THAI expects more than 170 billion baht in ticket sales next year, up from 168 billion in 2007.

Executives believe passenger loads will be at 80 percent during the November-December period, up by 2 percent from last year.
