THAILAND: HIGH RISK OF TERROR ATTACKS

Bangkok, 13 July (AKI) - Thai intelligence sources have warned there is a high risk of large scale terrorist attacks by the end of the month in three southern provinces with a Muslim majority - Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani. The sources said that Permuda, the youth wing of the radical Muslim insurgent group RKK (Runda Kumpulan Kecil), is organizing the attacks which according to local press reports could take place between 26-28 July.

Police are on high alert and have boosted security around government offices and schools in the three provinces where attacks and armed clashes have caused more than 1,300 deaths since 2004.

Membership in Permuda is reportedly a first step to join the RKK and carrying out attacks is considered a rite of passage.

In an interview recently published on the Thai daily, The Nation, Adul Saengsingkeow, a top police official stationed in the south, said that Permuda has an estimated 549 members today. The official also said that the insurgent group RKK includes approximately 3,000 militants.

Saengsingkeow claimed that the RKK includes among its members ulema or Muslim scholars trained in Islam and Islamic law, who work to promote the cause of the southern separatists among local youths.
