ASEAN pleased with China ties
Kuala Lumpur, July 13 2006 (Prensa Latina) - The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) welcomed China´s willingness to foster ties with this 10-state bloc.
In the celebration Wednesday of the 15th anniversary of the establishment of official links between Beijing and the ASEAN, Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing praised the positive relations and expressed his government´s willingness to further them. He said the strategic association between the two parties has generated "tangible benefits for the regional peoples," and urged the 11-state leaders to discuss how to develop even more those links in a commemorative summit to be run in October. Li said that Prime Minister Wen Jiabao will attend that meeting, scheduled in the Chinese city of Nanning, Guanxi province. The ASEAN was founded on August 8, 1967 in Bangkok by its original five members: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. The ASEAN and China are currently negotiating a free trade agreement for 2010, which will establish the largest market with a consumer force up of 1.8 billion people. The reception was attended by the ASEAN countries´ representatives in Beijing, plus China´s People National Congress (Parliament) vice president Gu Xiulian, who presides over the China-ASEAN Association. http://www.targets.org/artikelen/2006-07/ASEAN-Pleased-with-China.htm
