Sino-Thai Business Council expected to be set up by this year

BANGKOK, June 7 (TNA) - The Federation of Thai Industry (FTI)'s Chairman Santi Vilassakdanont on Wednesday projected that the Sino-Thai Business Council at a provincial level could be established by this year as suggested by Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Somkid Jatusripitak.

The proposed set-up of the council was initiated by Dr. Somkid, who wants the Thai private sector to forge closer cooperation with its Chinese counterpart in 9 provinces and 3 special administrative zones in the so-called Pan Pearl River Delta (PPRD) area in southern China.

He said FTI would discuss with the Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI) a way to determine an approach to coordinating with the Chinese private sector in establishing the council, which is expected to take place by this year.

"Although the Sino-Thai Business Council has already existed at present, it is the council at a central level. Should there be the council at a provincial level, it will further help enhance economic, trade and investment cooperation between Thailand and provinces of China, especially in the PPRD area," said Mr. Santi.

"It is expected that tourism of the two countries will be the first business that expands satisfactorily since the private sectors of both countries are already ready to cooperate. What it needs is a concrete state support in facilitating travel by tourists," he added.

Mr. Santi conceded that the Chinese investment expansion in Thailand needs to take time because it involves negotiations to seek partnership.

However, he believed bilateral investment would increase as a result of the cooperation by state and private sectors of the two countries.

He added that political uncertainties in Thailand would not worry Chinese investors because they could be explainable. (TNA) - E005
