Malaysia releases Thais to honour King

Malaysia on Sunday released and immediately repatriated 121 Thai nationals who had been detained for illegal entry to honour His Majesty the King's 60 years on the throne.

The 121 Thais arrived at the Sadao immigration checkpoint in the southern Songkhla province Sunday where they were greeted by relatives, said the state-run Thai News Agency.

They were released in order to join celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of His Majestty's accession to the throne, which will be held from June 8 to 13.

The goodwill gesture comes at a time when Malaysian authorities are imposing severe penalties on illegal immigrants from Thailand, including whipping, fines up to the equivalent of 200,000 baht ($5,000 dollars) and five-year prison sentences.

While Thailand itself attracts more than a million migrants workers, legal and illegal, from its other neighbours, thousands of Thais cross into Malaysia illegally is search of work. (dpa)
