Long holiday death toll climbs to 68
The Songkran road toll climbed to 68 yesterday, the second day of the "10 dangerous days" of the long holiday period, with more than 800 people injured.
On Saturday alone, there were 445 road accidents across the country in which 38 people were killed and 496 others injured. The number of deaths at this stage were still lower by 18 than the government's prediction. The counting began on April 7, the first of the so-called "10 dangerous days" and will continue until April 16. Caretaker Interior Minister ACM Kongsak Wantana said drink-driving and speeding were the major causes of road accidents. He said Chiang Mai, with 5, recorded the highest number of deaths, followed by Chachoengsao, 4. Five provinces _ Kanchanaburi, Phichit, Phetchaburi, Lop Buri and Si Sa Ket _ recorded 3 deaths each over the past two days.
The highest number of injuries were reported in Trang, Nakhon Pathom and Bangkok, with 29 each. The minister ordered police manning road checkpoints not to be lenient with drink-drivers and speedsters, particularly drivers of passenger buses and trucks. Provincial authorities have also been asked to put clearer traffic signs along the roads. In Nakhon Ratchasima, motorists were being randomly breathalysed at checkpoints set up every 15km along the road from Bangkok, Pol Lt-Gen Sathaporn Laothong, chief of Police Region 3, said. The Probation Department would propose that drink-drivers be deprived of medical welfare benefits.
A woman was killed and four others injured when a van they were in was hit by a Bangkok-bound train in Phitsanulok's Bang Krathum district about 9am.
