Patience key to temple feud

Truth be told, there is little expectation the high-level Thai-Cambodian talks will bring about a breakthrough to resolve the simmering border conflict around Preah Vihear, the 900-year-old Hindu temple recently listed as a World Heritage Site.

Still, both neighbouring countries must keep firmly in mind that continued discussion - even if it does not seem to produce stunning results at the moment while promising to drag on for a long time - is at present the best possible course of action and the only workable common ground which must be maintained at all costs.

Thailand: The perfect compromise

We usually spend Christmas with my mother, whose birthday falls on Christmas day. This year, however, when she announced she would not come to Hong Kong due to another trip she had planned, we had a moment's pause. What to do? Where to go?

While Erik and I do not consider ourselves "beach" people, we had succumbed to this child-friendly environment for our two big trips since arriving in Asia 15 months ago. This time around, we decided on a compromise: we would go to Thailand and spend 6 days in the mountainous north and then head south to soak up some sunshine.

Former Thai tourism official quits politics amid scandal

Bangkok - The former head of Thailand's state-run tourism authority on Thursday tendered her resignation as deputy leader of a political party contesting the upcoming polls amid accusations that she received 1.7 million dollars in bribes from a US couple.

Juthamas Siriwan, who was Tourism Authortity of Thailand (TAT) governor between 2002 to 2006, handed in her resignation as deputy leader of the Puea Pandin Party after being fingered on Tuesday by the US Justice Department as the recipient of 1.7 million dollars in bribes from US film executive Gerald Green and his wife Patricia.

Going out for Thai is a unique experience

When Laurel Smith stepped off the plane, she didn't know much of the language and only had a vague idea of where she would go. But the following weeks turned out to be one of the best adventures of her life.

The international security and conflict resolution major had a little curiosity and a lot of courage, so she used Winter Break to find herself an overseas adventure.

"I had planned to go to this little part of Bangkok, to a hostel I looked up online before I left," she said.

She bought her ticket to Thailand at a high price two months prior to her departure. But purchasing the ticket was the extent of Smith's planning.

Beached Jonah's relishes a whale of a season

WHALE season surges ahead with Jonah's at Whale Beach in Sydney today joining the elite Relais & Chateaux family, the third property in Australia to be accepted into the France-based hotel and restaurant group.

Jonah's chef George Francisco tells Food Detective the listing is very difficult to get and food is judged as part of the process. There have been a number of judging visits over a couple of years and Francisco was not aware of them, but on the last visit three people came and ate, he says, and they found the food just perfect.

Serendipitously unfolding at the same time as the listing is Jonah's (Moroccan-inspired, the chef says) move outdoors. Following recently won approval, tables are now out on the balcony full-ime. Francisco says, "Instead of being a box on a hill, the place is now open to the environment." Coco Republic's Romaine Alwill has designed the outdoor furniture and Francisco's terrace menu offers dishes such as oysters (from across Australia, shucked and prepared to order, even singly) as well as jamon and shellfish plates. People can come from midday through the afternoon and evening, to drink and nibble. "It's how people eat in Spain and France," the chef says. Soon there'll be a few tables on the lawn as well.

Bus, MRT and Chinese restaurant among S'pore's noisiest locations: Survey

SINGAPORE: Taking a bus, getting on the MRT or having dinner in a Chinese restaurant - everyday activities that we hardly think twice about. Yet they may cause damage to your hearing, according to the results of a Reader's Digest test released on Monday.

In its June test, Reader's Digest measured the sound levels in public spaces in four Asian cities for five minutes at a time, using a certified sound level meter.

The magazine visited places such as shopping malls, restaurants, train stations and streets in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Hong Kong.

The results were staggering.

Nearly all locations, tested mostly during office hours, registered sound levels above 70 decibels. The World Health Organisation (WHO) considers this as the threshold beyond which hearing may be damaged if a person is continuously exposed to the noise.

Someone speaking in his normal voice would register about 50 decibels, while music played loudly would typically reach 80 decibels.

Promoting Tourism for People With Disabilities Focus of UN Forum in Bangkok

Removing barriers and making tourism accessible to the 650 million persons with disabilities around the world who represent a huge untapped market for the travel industry will be the focus of a three-day United Nations gathering set to begin tomorrow in Bangkok.

The meeting, organized by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (<"http://www.unescap.org/unis/press/2007/nov/n66.asp">ESCAP) in cooperation with Thai authorities and Disabled People International Asia-Pacific, brings together representatives of the travel industry, policymakers and people with disabilities to examine the growing market for accessible tourism in the region.

The recently adopted UN <" http://www.un.org/esa/socdev/enable/rights/convtexte.htm">Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities promotes accessibility of persons with disabilities and their participation in leisure and sport as a matter of right.

According to ESCAP, a significant portion of the world's 650 million people with disabilities are travellers with special needs. There are also 600 million older persons around the world - a number that is expected to double by 2025.

For those with special needs, tasks such as getting on and off airplanes, finding an accessible bus, taxi, hotel room, bathroom, or restaurant could all be a challenge.

Getting high in Bangkok

You could call it a busman's holiday. I've taken a break from observing Sydney's social scene to do the very same thing in Bangkok. There will be no go-go joints or ping-pong shows.

I'm seeking all that's upscale and hip in a city that, despite significant political upheaval in the past year, still claims to be Asia's party capital.

Headquarters is the suitably sybaritic Shangri-La Hotel on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, in the heart of the CBD and a short sway from a swathe of the city's swankiest bars. In its riverside Sunset Bar I study the local society bibles. All take pains to reassure that the 2006 coup and its resulting martial law have not diminished Bangkok's appetite for fun.
