Some airlines against transfer of international flights to Don Mueang

Senior executives of some airline companies have voiced their objection to transferring selected international flights from Suvarnabhumi Airport to the former international gateway of Don Mueang airport now being used for domestic flights. They cited possibly higher operational costs, while transportation between the two airports was still a hassle.

Sopin Daengteth, chairwoman of the Airport Operations Committee (AOC), said AOC executives would attend a workshop organized by Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited tomorrow (Monday). They would stand firm on their disagreement with the government's approval of using Don Muang airport for international flights.

She noted the AOC had earlier explained to the government it would not support a return to Don Muang airport on the outskirts of Bangkok for international flights. Airlines would have to shoulder higher operational costs while passengers would be inconvenienced if the two airports were used simultaneously because transportation between the two was still lax, she explained.

Meanwhile Udom Tantiprasongchai, chairman of Orient Thai Airlines, said the reopening of Don Mueang airport for international flights would be senseless if the government wanted to solve problems prevailing at Suvarnabhumi Airport, located in Bangkok's neighboring province of Samut Prakan, because the latter had now been in service for slightly more than a year. He said expansion at Suvarnabhumi Airport could easily be carried out if the government claimed the airport was over-crowded.

Don Muang closer to international flights

The Airports of Thailand is considering re-opening Don Muang airport for both domestic and international flights.

According to AoT President Air Marshal Chana U-sathaporn, the proposal was sparked by an increase in traffic at Suvarnabhumi airport.

Air Marshal Chana admitted that although passenger numbers at Suvarnabhumi did not increase, the number of aircraft landing at the airport continues to grow.

He claimed the proposal to return flights to Don Muang was not the AoT's way of resolving the noise pollution problem around the airport. Noise pollution has been one of the AoT's major headaches following complaints by scores of residents near the airport. The AoT has disbursed financial compensation to some of those affected by the problem but it is far from being resolved.

Bangkok needs second airport according to Transport Minister

Thailand's Transport Ministry has put their backing behind allowing Don Mueang Airport to operate international flights before the completion of a feasibility study due to increasing congestion at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Transport Minister, Theera Haocharoen said the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) study would only be completed after seven months at the earliest which would prove too late after Suvarnabhumi is already approaching its full capacity of 45 million passengers a year.

"This issue should be cleared before my term as transport minister comes to an end," he said.

The operator of both airports, AOT is in the process of finalising guidelines to resume operations at Don Mueang and plans to meet with international airlines on November 26 to discuss the move.  Several airlines have reportedly voiced their opposition to the move, saying dual airports would only be efficient with good transport links.

Asian airports ban liquids on flights to UK, US

Authorities stepped up airport security across Asia yesterday and banned passengers to the United States and Britain from carrying liquids after London said it foiled a plot to blow up transatlantic flights.

Flights were delayed and long queues formed at airports around the region because of the new security measures, which include frisking and intensive baggage checks.

Officials in India said quick reaction police teams, armed with light machineguns, were on guard at various airports and plainclothes policemen were mingling with passengers to check for suspicious characters. "No hand baggage will be allowed on select flights to some Western destinations," said an officer of the Central Industrial Security Force, the agency responsible for the security of Indian airports.
