Ancient stucco art in Phetchburi

Decorative stucco is an ancient art and is a part of Thai architural design, mostly seen in temples. Although stucco designs in ancient temples are mostly gone, some temples in Phetchburi still feature both old and new stucco works. We have more details in this report from Thai News Agency.

Wat Mahathat in Phetchburi, about 200 kms west of Bangkok, was built around 800 years ago. It is one of the places in the province  where visitors can see ancient stucco art. Some of the decorative stucco here was created by contemporary stucco artists including Thongruang Em-oat.

Thongruang  is one of the well-known stucco artists in Phetchaburi. His house is open to people interested in the art, to learn and practice making stucco sculptures and reliefs.

Many temples along the Chao Phraya River hold keys to the old Thai way of life

History lies at every nook and corner along the banks of the Chao Phraya River, especially in Thon Buri where Bangkok grew its roots.

Thon Buri, according to Julapassorn Phanomwan na Ayudhya, was founded during the Ayutthaya period, and residents were mostly aristocrats working for Ayutthaya's royal court.

"Thon Buri was a model of Ayutthaya," said Julapassorn, president of Siam Tasana, a group of Thai history and culture enthusiasts. "Everything was kept in original condition."

These include numerous temples, ancient neighbourhoods and the old way of life.

"In Bang Yi Khan district, south of Rama VIII bridge, the Hindu community used to have their cow sheds," added Rapeepat Kesakoson, an officer at Bangkok's tourism division, who has a keen interest in Bangkok's history.

Transport Ministry assessing construction of dual rail tracks

BANGKOK, June 3 (TNA) - The Thai cabinet has assigned the Transport Ministry to conduct a feasibility study on construction of dual railway tracks from Bangkok to major provinces in a bid to reduce transport costs of goods and passengers.

Transport Minister Pongsak Raktapongpaisal said that the cabinet at a special meeting here Friday gave the green light to the ministry to conduct the study on installing the double tracks linking major cities, namely from Bangkok to the upper southern province of Prachuap Khiri Khan, the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima and the northern province of Nakhon Sawan, as goods and passenger transport along these routes were found to be especially heavy.

Tunnels will be contructed in conservation areas where the rail tracks will have to pass, for example, Khao Yai National Park, in order to preserve the environment.

During the cabinet meeting, Mr. Pongsak also proposed a plan to widen railway tracks from the current one-metre to 1.4 metres, known as standard gauge, which could help save cargo transportation costs.
