Suspected grenade explodes at Thai TV centre: govt
BANGKOK -- A device believed to be a grenade exploded outside Thailand's national broadcasting headquarters in Bangkok on Tuesday, a government spokesman said.
The blast, which caused no injuries, occurred in front of the building housing the National Broadcasting Services of Thailand, spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn told reporters.
"Based on circumstantial evidence it's likely to have been caused by an M-79 (grenade)," he said.
The capital has been under emergency rule since April 7 in response to anti-government "Red Shirt" protests, in which 91 people died and about 1,900 were injured in clashes between protesters and the army.

Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand announces tourism development plans
In Bangkok on Sunday, a grenade explosion in front of the Big C Rajdamri Supercentre killed one person and injured at least 10. Early morning on July 30, another bomb explosion in Phaya Thai district's Soi Rangnam hospitalized one man. With the red shirt protests causing havoc in previous weeks too, many have been puzzled by Travel + Leisure magazine's celebration of Bangkok as the "World's Best City". Chiang Mai came second, and these two Thai cities are the only Asian cities in the travel magazine's top 10 list voted by almost 16,000 readers.
Timing partly explains the result. Polling for the World's Best City ended on March 31, just a few days before the 10-week-long red shirt protests that closed down the Rajaprasong intersection and put the country into a state of emergency. Matt Leppard, editor-in-chief of Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia, also explains that the criteria for choosing the best city had little to do with "livability". Respondents were asked to rate cities' sights, culture/arts, restaurants/food, people, shopping, and value.

Thaksin files B100m suit against Somkiat
Deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday filed a defamation suit against People's Alliance for Democracy member Somkiat Pongpaiboon, demanding 100 million baht in damages plus 7.5% interest per year. The Civil Court lawsuit accuses Mr Somkiat, a Democrat party MP, of slandering Mr Thaksin in speeches he made at PAD street protests.
Mr Thaksin said Mr Somkiat tarnished his and his family's reputation when accusing him of attempting to bring down the constitutional monarchy and tampering with the justice system to absolve himself of malpractice allegations.
The lawsuit also names ASTV Co and Thaiday.com.
Mr Thaksin also sought an injunction prohibiting Mr Somkiat from making false accusations and the two firms from broadcasting Mr Somkiat's comments.
Lawyer Vanij Pinthavanit told the court Mr Somkiat's comments provoked hostility and hatred towards his client and his family.

Bangkok 'key battleground'
Victory in capital is crucial to party's chances of leading the next government, Abhisit says
Bangkok is likely to become a decisive battleground in determining whether the Democrat Party or its rivals claim victory to lead the next government, party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said yesterday.
"The race is expected to be intense, though not anticipated to degenerate into social divisions, and a victory in Bangkok is crucial for the Democrats to have a chance at running the country," he said.
Abhisit was speaking at a press conference to introduce 36 candidates for direct election in 12 Bangkok constituencies.
All major parties plan to field top-notch candidates in the capital and three leading contenders for the position of prime minister are party-list candidates competing from Bangkok via proportionate voting. The three are Abhisit, Samak Sundaravej of the People Power Party and Prachai Leophairatana of Matchima Thipataya.

Thai Coup Leader Won't Rule Out Another Attempt To Topple Government
Bangkok, Thailand (AHN) - The leader who ousted Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will not run for any elected post in upcoming Dec. 23 polls but says he will wait until Tuesday to reveal his political plans.
Deputy Prime Minister Sonthi Boonyaratkalin, the coup's architect, also refused to rule out staging another coup d'etat if the People Power Party (PPP) loyal to Thaksin wins and brings him back to power.
"It is a future matter that we shall have to wait and see," he said.
He even challenged Thaksin, saying "he can return now so we can prosecute him." Thaksin is accused of the unlawful sale of a family-owned telecom company to a foreign entity.
"Laws, not statements of anyone, will tell whether he is right or wrong," Sonthi said in reaction to a statement by PPP leader Samak Sundaravej that a victory in December would vindicate the ex-premier.
Asked if he is going to resign from his post as deputy premier to pave the way for his political future, he said, "I do not know." Sonthi retired from his position as army chief in September.

No casualties were immediately reported in the blaze, said police Lt-Col Kittiphan Chunthakarn, chief of Thung Mahamek police.
He said the fire, which broke out in an area where about 500 old wooden houses are packed together on narrow streets, was brought under control after an hour, despite difficulties faced by emergency vehicles in getting through rush-hour traffic.
The cause of the blaze was not yet known, he said, though it may have been helped along by the dry conditions.
